Castro Valley: Lake Chabot Mt bike loop

A daytime review of the NiteDawgs mountain bike ride around Lake Chabot Regional Park, Castro Valley. The ride begins in the parking lot across from the Regional Parks Headquarters. The usual route is counter-clockwise: 13.2 miles with 1,800 feet of climbing. This ride introduces two friends from Nebraska, Neal and his sister Lynnze, to one of our local mountain biking adventures. Please RSVP so we know if to wait or roll.

Castro Valley – Zoo Loop

Route A: Castro Valley/Redwood Road/Pinehurst/Skyline north to Grizzly Peak/return- 36 miles with 3,290 feet climbing.
Route B: Castro Valley/Redwood Road/Return at Skyline.  Intermediate, hilly. AKA: Almost the 2nd half of the Grizzly Peak Century) 26.6 miles with 2,320 feet climbing.Directions to Ride Start:
Valley Car Wash in Castro Valley @ Redwood Road & Village Dr.
MapQuest / GPS: go to Peet’s Coffee at 20453 Redwood Road, Castro Valley.
BART friendly (Castro Valley Station)   Car wash is in back of Peet’s.

Route A (Vanilla): 29 miles with 2,870 feet of climbing (includes Golden Gate Park, Twin Peaks, and San Bruno Mountain).
Route B: 45 miles with 3,700 feet of climbing (adds a round trip to the North end of the Golden Gate Bridge & Marin Headlands).

Berkeley/Point Richmond Bay Trail

Another easy ride with an option for +10-20 miles.  A do-over for the rain canceled 3/26 adventure.

32 miles with only 378 feet of climbing.  Only car traffic is on Point Richmond city streets along with a few intersections that cross the Bay Trail.

Directions to starting point:

South 880: Take University Ave West exit, turn Right on University Ave , then follow step B.

North 880: Take University Ave East exit, go to 8th St and make a U turn.  Continue West on University Ave and cross over 880.  Go straight, then follow step B.

Step B: Going West on University Ave veer to the Left (follow signs to Hana Steak House).  At the intersection where the Berkeley Marina Bait & Tackle Shop is on the right, go LEFT into the dirt parking lot of the Cal Sailing club.  There are outhouses available and across the street is the bait & grocery shop and a BBQ restaurant.


Livermore: Various loops including Mines Road

Various loops available depending on weather and level of training.

Directions to Ride Start: Starting point is in the parking lot at shopping center with Emil Villa’s restaurant- 3064 Pacific Ave, Livermore.  Take Livermore Ave exit off of 580 Freeway.  Here is the mapQuest link to the parking lot.

Routes:
Route 1: Out & Back to Junction- 60 miles with 4,000 feet climbing (food & water at Junction restaurant).
Route 2: Patterson Pass/Corral Hollow- 44 miles with 2,630 feet climbing.
Route 3: Patterson Pass/Altamont Pass- 32.5 miles with 2,200 feet climbing. (Can make this a 22 mile loop and with less climbing)

Description of Mines Road: Advanced, lots of climbing, 2+ water bottles. Avoid riding in hot weather.  Lunch at the Junction Restaurant at U-turn/re-turn (30 mile point)
Winter rule: Check this website after 6:30am on day of ride to see if canceled due to rain.
